David Sharir: A World in Miniature
Israeli artist David Sharir, the son of Russian immigrants, was born in in Tel Aviv. He first exhibited his paintings at the age of 19, and a year later held his first solo exhibition.
Sharir’s style is characterized by a blending of biblical themes and symbols, ornamental designs and, often, a whimsical childlike tone. Some of these elements he absorbed while studying in Italy, where he was drawn to late medieval painting, Byzantine mosaics, 14th-century Siennese frescoes and various architectural motifs. Other qualities of his paintings he transmuted from the Russian folk art passed down to him by his parents and from Middle Eastern artistic traditions and Persian miniatures. To this variegated world, Sharir added his own invention: small stylized figures—a sort of fantastic theatrical troupe—through which he comments on human rituals and experience.
In , Sharir moved to Jaffa, part of modern Tel Aviv, and set up shop in the Old City. Here elements from Italy and elsewhere coalesced into Sharir’s distinctive style. His Jonah series (), like the biblical Jonah himself, embarks from the artist’s beloved Jaffa (see oil painting). The fi

Sharir was born to a Jewish-Russian family that came to Israel in the s. From a young age, his talent for painting and love of the stage were evident. He grew up near the Habima Theater, and was inspired by the world of theater, while studying art and playing the piano. At the age of 20, he won first prize in a young artists' exhibition at the Tel Aviv Artists' House, and his career took off from there.
Over the years, he has worked with major theaters such as "Habima", "Hacameri" and "Haifa Theater", and with dance companies such as "Batsheva" and "Inbal". The stage designs and c
David Sharir's paintings and graphic works are clearly a celebration of life, and a recognition that life is there to be exalted, that in its complexities it is unified and harmonious in the midst of contradiction. Born in Israel in , Sharir grew to maturity during the emergence and development of the State of Israel. That influence of the spirit of Israel during Sharir's youth, of a country which turned to the Bible for its inspiration, is evident in the artist's work. Truly a son of a land which united Eastern and Western cultures, Sharir has blended the two in his art. The development of Sharir's unique, meticulously ornamented style is bound up with his training and experience. After art studies in Tel Aviv, the artist went on to the Academia del Belle Arte in Florence and proceeded to study architecture and theater design at the University of Rome. He experimented with abstraction, and participated in shows both in Italy and in Israel. Upon his return to Israel, he started to design scenery and costumes for the theater. The production of "Queen Esther" at the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv in marked a turning point in his style. Hebrew manuscripts of the Middle Ages, calligrap
