River of Sorrow
by Todd Nigro
Drinking from the waters of sorrow
sustains a different kind of life.
This river is hidden
from the rest of the world.
Tears drip from my chin and fall into
an endless flow of liquid love.
This river sparkles with beauty.

Tis a Fearful Thing
by Yehuda HaLevi ( – )
‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.
A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
to be,
And oh, to lose.
A thing for fools, this,
And a holy thing,
a holy thing
to love.
For your life has lived in me,
your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
‘Tis a human thing, love,
a holy thing, to love
what death has touched.

to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything youve held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.

A bit of a heavy poem perhaps, this one. But then, life offers full size challenges sometimes and in those moments words like these can hit just the right note of recognition and encouragement to lean in, open up, say yes. And I find that in those times, practice comes into its own like never before. While ordinarily it can at times feel a bit boring, or uneventful, or even a bit on the pointless side, this sitting-and-doing-nothing suddenly reveals its true colours when difficulty arises and you just know that without practice, it would have been way worse. And in m

This is very much a poem for when we go through tough times. It has some strong messages and powerful depictions of grief, bringing both sadness and hope.
From the very first line of the poem, Ellen Bass urges us to love life. Sometimes we might have to try really very hard to do this, especially when we have no stomach for it.
When we are grieving, ill
