Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Jesus Christ Superstar (Original Studio Cast Recording)
Is this a little different then the other albums I’ve discussed? Yes. Am I still discussing this track rock opera like any other album? Yes. I decided to make this blog post to talk about the music of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, rather than the broadway show or movie. Furthermore, I don’t want to talk about just any recorded version of the show, I want to talk about the original studio cast recording feature the likes of Ian Gillan, Murray Head, and Yvonne Elliman.
Ian Gillan, the lead singer of early rock band Deep Purple, sings as Jesus in this recording, and I honestly think that no other rendition of this role has lived up to the performance that Gillan gave. His voice was already defining so much of the “rock” sound in the late 60’s that he gives each of song he sings an unmistakable feel. I think the harsh and raw emotion Gillian’s voice gives to this role is so fitting for the period of Jesus’s life in which the show is focusing on— i.e. the end of his life leading up to the crucifixion.

Ian Gillan was on his way to being a superstar with Deep Purplewhen he played one in the lead role of a musical. It was the Decca album version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Released on October 12, , it reached No.1 in the US on the February 20, chart.
The recorded incarnation of the musical was the original, created before the show became a smash hit stage show. Its cast list is fascinating, as it contained a number of artists who went on to considerable success in their own right, and some others who were enjoying success elsewhere at the time.
Gillan’s rise and rise
As the Superstar album emerged in the autumn of , Gillan was in the charts as Purple’s frontman, with the “Black Night” single and In Rock album. He played Jesus Christ opposite the young Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, a role she reprised for four years in the stage version.
Elliman had modest success in early with a version of the show’s “I Don’t Know How To Love Him.” She then hit her chart stride in the second half of the s, with hits like “Love Me” and “Hello Stranger” and, of course, a place o
