Author Jhumpa Lahiri published her debut in , Interpreter of Maladies, winning the Pulitzer Prize. She followed up in with her first novel, The Namesake, and returned to short stories with the No. 1 New York Times best-seller Unaccustomed Earth. Lahiri's novel, The Lowland, was partially inspired by real-world political events.
Early Life and Education
Nilanjana Sudheshna Lahiri was born on July 11, , in London, England, to mother Tapati and father Amar, a Bengali couple who immigrated to the United Kingdom from Calcutta, India. Lahiri's father, a university librarian, opted to relocate to the United States for work, eventually settling in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, when she was still a small child.
With the family nickname, "Jhumpa," coming to be used by school teachers, Lahiri went on to attend Barnard College in New York, focusing on English literature. She then joined the student body of Boston University, earning three literary master's degrees before receiving her doctorate in Renaissance studies.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri is celebrated for her depiction of immigrant and Indian-American life, yet her poignant stories also capture universal themes of longing, loneliness and barriers of communication. She was born in London in and raised in Rhode Island. Her Bengali parents, a teacher and a librarian, took their family on regular trips to Calcutta, India to visit extended family. Lahiri completed her B.A. at Barnard College, and from Boston University she earned M.A. degrees in English, Creative Writing, and Comparative Literature and the Arts, as well as a Ph.D. in Renaissance Studies.

Early Life
Jhumpa Lahiri was born in in London. Her actual name is Nilanjana Sudeshna Lahiri, but prefers to be called her nickname “Jhumpa.” Her parents had immigrated to the United Kingdom from Bengal, but the family moved to the United States when Jhumpa was only two years old. Living in the United States most of her life, Jhumpa Lahiri identifies herself as an American. In the early childhood, the family lived in Rhode Island. Her father works at the University of Rhode Island. He is a librarian. Her mother cares for her Bengali roots a lot; therefore they all visited their relatives in Calcutta as often as possible.
Education
Jhumpa Lahiri attended kindergarten in Rhode Island. This was where she gained her nickname. It was created by a kindergarten teacher, who admitted that it was much more comfortable in everyday use than Nilanjana Sudeshna. Even though it was easier for the kindergarten staff, Lahiri has stated that it made her feel uneasy, that her real name was causing someone difficulties. This struggle over her name and real identity has also influenced some of Lahiri’s work later in life.
