Hauser & Wirth Somerset is proud to present ‘Unconscious Landscape. Works from the Ursula Hauser Collection’, an exhibition focused entirely on female artists. Over the course of four decades Ursula Hauser has assembled a deeply personal collection of works that brings together a remarkable overview of late 20th century modern masters in dialogue with contemporary artists. The exhibition, which is curated by Ursula Hauser’s daughter Manuela Wirth, together with Laura Bechter, Curator of the Ursula Hauser Collection, spans all five galleries in Somerset, presenting 65 works by female artists and artists’ estates including Louise Bourgeois, Heidi Bucher, Sonia Gomes, Eva Hesse, Sheila Hicks, Maria Lassnig, Lee Lozano, Meret Oppenheim, Carol Rama, Sylvia Sleigh and Alina Szapocznikow. This presentation follows a series of Hauser & Wirth exhibitions focused on important private collections including the Onnasch Collection, The Panza Collection and the Perlstein Collection.

We are pleased to invite you to the opening of ‘Lee Lozano’. This exhibition presents a significant body of early work by the pioneering New York-based artist. Created in –, the paintings and drawings of this series use airplanes as a central image and can be considered as examples of the artist’s passionate exploration of creative energy in its purist form. Lozano’s works from the early s are stylistically distinct, admired for their furious physicality, unapologetic confidence and urgent energy. They exploit the boundaries between body and machine, eroticism and aggression, to powerful effect. A passionate and shrewd observer of urban culture, Lozano created work in response to the constraints imposed by systems constituted via dynamics of gender, power, money, politics, and institutions such as marriage and maternity. She rapidly rose to recognition on a male-dominated art scene that was rebelling against abstract expressionism. In , she dropped out of New York art life. Within the twelve years of her career, she formulated an independent and radical artistic oeuvre that was often provocative. Now, for the first time, her work is presented in Sweden.

Lee Lozano’s works bear traces of pop art, minimalism and conceptual art, the dominating trends of the s. However, she expressed herself in an entirely unique style. Originally, she worked with a figurative imagery dealing with aspects of the human body and the relationship between power, sexuality and violence. This figurative subject matter gradually developed into intensely powerful tool paintings. Eventually, her images became even more abstract – although still replete with stark ambiguities. Towards the end of the s, she abandoned painting in favour of conceptual works, her so-called Language Pieces.
