Malema says he will take Mbete to court
Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema said on Tuesday he will take National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to court for not recusing herself from the debate on a motion to impeach President Jacob Zuma.
He said her refusal to recuse herself was a conflict of interests and that she could not be objective.
&#;In summary: you should receive court papers&#;&#; he told Mbete.
After a &#;minute&#; adjournment that lasted almost an hour during which she consulted with the chief whips of the various parties on calls from the opposition for her to recuse herself from the debate&#; Mbete made it clear that she would continue to preside over the debate.
&#;We have important business today. We should be able to differ without resorting to unbecoming language&#;&#; she told MPs.
Jackson Mthembu&#; who experienced a baptism of fire on his first day on the job as ANC chief whip&#; said not all opposition parties had attended the meeting with Mbete.
&#;We argued there is nothing in any law she should recuse herself&#;&#; he added.
