H.A. Rey: Hans Augusto Rey (Hans Augusto Reyersbach)
As the legendary author and illustrator of the Curious George series, H. A. Rey or Hans Augusto Rey spent much of his free time as a child in the zoo drawing animals. Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany on Sept. 16, After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in
Eventually, they made their way to the United States. where the first Curious George book was published in The series has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. This husband and wife team are probably best known for their cheeky monkey creation Curious George although they collaborated on several other children’s characters in their lengthy career. Hans, who always styled himself H.A. Rey was born in Germany as Hans Augusto Reyersbach in but found himself in Brazil during the time the Nazis rose to power where he met Margret, also a Jew, whose family was also trying to escape Nazi persecution.
Hans found he had a facility for drawing and storytelling and aided by Margret they created their first story book Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys – which included the first incarnation of Curious George. The pair had moved to Paris in but found themselves again under pressure to move on as the Nazi threat of invasion loomed and they headed in a roundabout way across Europe heading for sanctuary in the USA.
Hans had originally thought he might produce a series of watercolours for the Curious George stories but abandoned this in favour of the graphic, highly coloured cartoon style that typified his work. Alongside Margret’s facility for storytelling the combination was h

Margarete Elisabeth Waldstein was born on May 16, in Hamburg, German Empire, the daughter of Gertrude (Rosenfeld) and Felix Waldstein. Her father was a member of the Reichstag. She studied art at Bauhaus in Dessau, Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and the University of Munich between and and afterward worked in advertising.
