Niccolò Piccinni (sometimes referred to as Nicola Piccinni or Piccini) was an Italian composer and a central figure of both Italian and French opera in the second half of the 18th century; he is considered the father of opera buffa internationally, one of the most important composers of Classicism and one of the last great representatives of the Neapolitan school of music.
He was born in Bari on January 16, , at “hore ventuno,” the son of Silvia Latilla (sister of the opera composer Gaetano Latilla) and Onofrio Piccinno (later the surname was changed to Piccinni), a violin and double bass player in the basilica of San Nicola.

Since Piccinni’s father, although also a musician, had objected to his son following the same career as him, the archbishop of Bari, Muzio Gaeta II, thrilled to hear his son repeatedly touching with melodic chords the harpsichord that was in his palace arranged to pay for his musical studies and sent him, when he was only fourteen, to the Conservatory of Sant’Onofrio in Naples, one of the three famous music institutes of the time.

The composer Niccolò Piccinni, one of the most popular writers of opera in 18th century Europe, was born on this day in in Bari.

Piccinni, who lived mainly in Naples while he was in Italy, had the misfortune to be placed under house arrest for four years in his 60s, when he was accused of being a republican revolutionary.

He is primarily remembered, though, for having been invited to Paris at the height of his popularity to be drawn unwittingly into a battle between supporters of traditional opera, with its emphasis on catchy melodies and show-stopping arias, and those of the German composer Christoph Willibald Gluck, who favoured solemnly serious storytelling more akin to Greek tragedy.

Piccinni&#;s father was a musician but tried to discourage his son from following the same career. However, the Bishop of Bari, recognising Niccolò&#;s talent, arranged for him to attend the Conservatorio di Sant&#;Onofrioin Capuana in Naples.

Italian composer. From to he studied with Leo and then Durante at the S. Onofrio Conservatory in Naples. He then embarked on a successful operatic career, writing serious and comic operas for Naples. His first opera seria, Zenobia(), was given at the Teatro S. Carlo. In he received an operatic commission from Rome; his second opera for Rome, La Cecchina, ossia La buona figliuola() was a great success and established him as the favorite of the Roman public. From this time on he became known for his fertility as a composer. Sacchini, reported by Burney, claimed Piccinni had written operas, while La Borde and Ginguené gave the more accurate figure of From to Piccinni produced more than thirty operas in Naples, more than twenty in Rome, and others in all the major Italian cities.
