Giovanni Segantini: biography
Giovanni Battista Emanuele Maria Segatini was born on 15 January at Arco, in the province of Trento, Italy. (He added the “n” to his surname later to match the nickname “Segante” that his classmates at the Accademia di Brera had bestowed on him.) During his childhood he suffered a series of traumas that would contribute to transforming his adult life into a continuous quest for balance, unbridled luxury and solitary work. His mother, Margherita née De’ Girardi died after a severe illness in when he was only seven. That April, his father Antonio, a peddler of knickknacks in eternal financial trouble, decided to take the young Giovanni to Milan and leave him in the care of his stepsister, Irene. She, however, was unable to care for him. In , four years after his father’s death Giovanni was arrested in Milan for vagrancy and sent to the Marchiondi reformatory. After an attempt to escape, he was released early in thanks to the intervention of his stepbrother Napoleone who tried to interest him in photography in his shop in Trentino. Italian painter. Born in in Arco, in the province of Trient, on the northern bank of Lake Garda, Giovanni Segantini attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Subsequently, he lived in the Brianza region, and then moved to Switzerland in He first settled with his family in Savognin, but from he was based in Maloja and Soglio. Segantini died of peritonitis in , at the early age of 41, while working on the middle section of his Alpine Triptych, Nature, on the Schafberg high above Pontresina.
Already during his lifetime, Segantini was celebrated through much of Europe as an innovator and prophet, as well as an important Symbolist painter. His early works, executed in Milan and Brianza, still bear testimony to the traditional Lombard style of painting. After moving the Alps, with its pure, clear air, the artist was able to develop a style which exuded radiance and at the same time went hand in hand with the evolution of the Divisionism painting technique and his progression towards Symbolism.

Giovanni Segantini (Arco, - Mount Schafberg, ) was one of the most important painters of Symbolism. The figure of this artist is closely linked to the Swiss territory, where he spent a good part of his short life (he died at the age of only 41 crushed by peritonitis, while involved in an intense outdoor painting session in the mountains). His work is characterized by rural and bucolic themes, at first in a veristic vein, depicting glimpses and scenes of rural life in Lombardy, then turning to naturalism inspired by the Barbizon school, and finally veering toward symbolism, thus using nature as an allegory to present certain reflections and messages.
The gradual shift to symbolism also coincides with a major change in technique, that is, little by little Segantini abandons colors mixed together to introduce the divisionist technique. Giovanni Segantini (actually Giovanni Segatini) was born on January 15, , in Arco, Italy. When his parents died very early, he was taken to a half sister, though he ran away soon thereafter.
