Surely the only scholar to have had a corrido&#x;a Mexican-American border ballad &#x;composed in his honor, Américo Paredes was a pioneer in the academic study of the Mexican-American experience in the United States and of the culture of the U.S.-Mexico border. His study With His Pistol in His Hand: A Border Ballad and Its Hero was one of those rare works that overturned historical orthodoxy and opened up whole new areas of inquiry. Paredes fought to expand the Mexican-American presence at the University of Texas over his long career there and inspired countless students who went on to create the discipline of Chicano Studies. His own work, folklorist Richard Bauman was quoted as saying in the New York Times, showed "that a deep, detailed, nuanced understanding of the local will illuminate and inspire a more global vision."

Américo Paredes

Born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, Dr. Américo Paredes was an accomplished ethnographer, musician, poet, singer, novelist, cultural critic, journalist, activist, folklorist, and prolific scholar. Paredes received an upbringing that positioned him as a fully bicultural, bilingual, and well-educated individual, “bien educado,” learning an English curriculum in school and being taught Spanish at home. Upon graduating from Brownsville Junior College in he worked as a journalist for fourteen years, including on special assignment in Japan. He returned to the United States in to pursue his education and within six years, Paredes earned three degrees from the University of Texas at Austin: a BA in English and Philosophy and an MA and PhD in English (Folklore) and Spanish. In , Paredes joined the faculty in English and Anthropology at the University of Texas—becoming one of a handful of faculty of color on that campus—and mentored many students. He taught there until his retirement more than 30 years later.

Biography

Growing up in Brownsville, Texas, Paredes was to experience the double life of American and Mexican culture. Paredes was both a lover of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan books, and Mexican poetry—his father in fact composed décimas (a ten line poem with set rhyme scheme). This love of poetry was to hold Paredes in good stead when, at the age of 18, he won a poetry contest sponsored by Trinity College. This award was to gain him the attention of the high school principal, Mr. Irvine, who in turn, expedited his entrance into junior college in The same year Paredes entered college, an event that would mark his life occurred, the assassination of Cesar Augusto Sandino, about whom, five years later, Paredes would write “A Cesar Augusto Sandino.”

While in his second year of junior college, Paredes was also to write George Washington Gomez: A Mexico-Texan Novel. Although it was not published until , George Washington Gomez is Paredes' most well known work. The book tells the story of a young man growing up in Jonesville on the River (a fictional city Paredes used to represent the city of Brownsville) in the early 20th century. In the work,
