Colonial Living

April 3,
One thing is for sure, reading this book should instill in one's heart a great deal of gratitude. Meticulously documenting the colonial period, Tunis describes, in word and line drawing, how to make EVERYTHING. There are brief sketches about the initial settlements detailing their unique beginnings, ties to the old European countries, and different types of housing that reflected their home communities, but mostly this book is about the making of every thing, little and great, that was needed by the colonialist.

This is why I am of two minds about it. On the one hand, there are few books you will ever find that go into this level of detail. The illustrations are helpful in showing you just how it all fits together. It is a craftsmen's dream to read, step by step all that was done to make a hat or build a mill. And if reading that sort thing thrills you, or your student, go buy this book at once!

Of course, if you are writing a book about the colonial period, you could consult this as a guide to any homestead or profession!

It also cannot be denied that younger thinkers are concrete thinkers, full of wonder about how things in our world fit together.

Tunis, Edwin,

Edwin Tunis was born in Cold Springs Harbor, N.Y., on Dec. 8, He studied at City College in Baltimore and the Maryland Institute of Art and Design. He served as a pilot during World War II and then returned to Maryland Institute where he worked as a furniture designer and in advertising drawing layout copy. His typographical design talent led to work for printers (brochures and direct mail material) and later to illustrating for Grosset and Dunlop and A.P. Putnam's Sons. For Maryland's Tercentenary in , he designed a commemorative stamp and drew a literary and historical mural map of the state, which was later shown at the New York World's Fair. He then became a radio announcer in Baltimore at WBAL, while continuing his second career, which had begun in , as performer and stage and program designer with the Vagabond Players, a local theater group. This association lasted until when Edwin Tunis and his wife, Elizabeth, whom he married in , moved to a house in the country, which he had designed himself, "Long Last." World War II found him working in the engineering dept. of Black and Decker in Towson, N.J. In , he was commissioned by McCormick and Co. of Baltimore

In , the McCormick Company commissioned Tunis to paint a &#;History of Spices&#; mural in its Baltimore harbor office. It was &#; long and took him two and a half years to finish. While researching the subject, he discovered &#;there was no one book which recounted the whole basic story of the development of ships in a simple way that might interest young people.&#;

&#;An outline, a dummy, some pages of text, and one finished illustration went to a literary agent who sold Oars, Sail and Steam within a week, he said&#;

It was published in , launching fifty-five-year-old Edwin Tunis on a brand new career.

Other books followed: Weapons, ; Wheels, ; Colonial Living ; Indians, ; Frontier Living, (a Newberry Medal Honors winner), ; Colonial Craftsmen, ; Shaw&#;s Fortune, ; The Young United States, ( runner-up for the National Book Award), ; Chipmunks on the Doorstep, ; The Tavern at the Ferry, (an A.L.A. Notable Book),

Tunis believed that &#;illustrations should be as pleasing as the illustrator's abilities permit, but their prime purpose&#;is clear explanation. They must try&#;to put the object itself on the page.&#;
