Bici bianchi marco pantani biography

BIANCHI OLTRE RC MARCO PANTANI

In the summer of , Marco Pantani and Bianchi delivered some of the most epic stage race performances of all time, taking stunning victories at both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. It's a feat that only seven cyclists have ever achieved, and it confirmed IL Pirata's place in cycling history and Italian culture.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pantani's spectacular double Giro-Tour, we have created a very special commemorative edition of the Bianchi Oltre RC for

Our historic Bianchi Oltre RC edition is exquisitely finished in the exact same livery as the Bianchi MegaPro XL that Il Pirata rides during his incredible winning season. The frame and fork are carefully painted to reflect the spirit of those times. Even the famous Bianchi eagle head badge on the Oltre's head tube is a faithful recreation of the one that adorned Pantani's Grand Tour-winning bike.

The Bianchi Oltre is the pinnacle of modern racing performance thanks to its light and stiff frame. This is the perfect bike for Bianchi lovers: a bike worthy of paying tribute to Pantani's extraordinary feat and legacy. As befits a champion's bike, Oltre was built on the top Dur

Pantani Throwback: Bianchi MegaPro XL

Despite carbon having been on the scene for more than a decade in when Marco Pantani became the last rider to win both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, he chose to ride alloy. His Bianchi MegaPro XL was made with Dedacciai thin-wall alloy tubing, which was then given a shot-pin surface treatment to toughen the super-thin tube walls. The bike’s name, MegaPro XL, comes from the name of the down-tube design. Created in Bianchi’s legendary Reparto Corse [“race department”], the alloy down tube was round at the head tube, widened in the middle and then became elliptical at the bottom bracket.

The MegaPro XL represented the state of the art in alloy at the turn of the millennium. Pantani’s frame weighed just pounds (1, grams), just grams more than the ultralight carbon Specialissima. There were two versions of the Mega Pro, an L, and the top of the range XL that Pantani and his Mercatone Uno teammates rode.

There is a reason Pantani shied away from carbon. The mercurial Italian was fanatic about geometry. He drove Bianchi’s Reparto Corse to distraction with his demands. Pantani wanted different geometries depending on the individual stag

Bianchi released Marco Pantani edition “Specialissima”, a special bike to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Marco Pantani’s Giro-Tour double. The bike has the iconic celeste-yellow fade paint job, the same color schema of Marco Pantani’s Bianchi. In , after winning the Giro d’Italia, Pantani rode the yellow and celeste Bianchi Mega Pro XL (serial number H ) in the famous July 27 Grenoble-Le Duex Alpes stage of the Tour de France. He attacked Jan Ullrich on the Galibier climb and won the stage, taking the race lead. He went on to win the Tour in Paris ahead of 2nd finisher Ullrich and 3rd Bobby Julich.

This was a feat only achieved by seven riders in history: Fausto Coppi (, ), Jacques Anquetil (), Eddy Merckx (, , ), Bernard Hinault (, ), Stephen Roche (), Miguel Indurain (, ) and Marco Pantani ().

There is an important difference between the two bikes: Pantani’s Mega Pro XL was made with light aluminum, but the new Specialissima is full carbon. The frame, which also features Bianchi’s “Countervail” vibration canceling technology, is only grams.

The new bike is equipped with a Campagnolo Super Record mechanical groupset, Bora Ultra 35 tubular wheels, and a gold FSA K-For
