Pacita Abad
Born to a family of politicians and activists in Batanes, the furthermost-north island state in the Philippines, Pacita Abad () was sent to the US to finish her graduate studies after political violence initiated by Ferdinand Marcos put her life in danger. Abad settled in San Francisco in , drawn in by the Summer of Love, and met Jack Garrity a few years later, the two embarking upon a yearlong odyssey across Asia in While this trip and its myriad multicultural interactions convinced Abad to devote herself to art, it also foreshadowed the itinerant, global lifestyle that would characterize her artistic practice.
Widely defined by her use of color, something she remained adamant about from her early studies, Abad pioneered new forms of materiality in her work, illustrated in one instance by her widely celebrated trapunto paintings, a form of quilted painting the artist originated by stitching and stuffing her painted canvases instead of stretching them over a frame. Her oeuvre featured an immense array of subject matter, from tribal masks and social realist tableaus to lush and intricately rendered underwater scenes and abstract

She had over 40 solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in the U.S., Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America. Pacita’s trip across Asia to the Philippines through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Taiwan and Hong Kong drastically changed her life and career plans, as she decided to take up painting instead of law. Married to Garrity, whose work predisposed them to travel to numerous developing countries, her experiences in each place informed her subject matter from the beginning. Traditional art practices like ink-brush painting in Korea, paint brushing the Dominican Republic, batik making in Indonesia, tie-dye in Africa, mirrors in India, shells in Papua New Guinea, were all techniques she introduced either singly or several in one art work. In the late seventies and early eighties Pacita introduced a quilting method trapunto onto her canvasses, which were then layered with objects on top of her quilted material: stones, sequins, glass, buttons, shells, mirrors, printed textile. She referred to this technique, and the process of layering, stuffing, stitching and the collaging of objects on painted canvas as trapunto painting.
Characterized by vibrant color and accumulated material, these large scale trapunto paintings
