Born in Brno-Židenice, Moravia, he lived briefly in Polná, but was raised in the Nymburk brewery as the manager's stepson.
Hrabal received a Law degree from Prague's Charles University, and lived in the city from the late s on.
He worked as a manual laborer alongside Vladimír Boudník in the Kladno ironworks in the s, an experience which inspired the "hyper-realist" texts he was writing at the time.
His best known novels were Closely Watched Trains () and I Served the King of England. In he bought a cottage in Kersko, which he used to visit till the end of his life, and where he kept cats ("kočenky").

Hrabal se sice narodil v Židenicích (dnes Brno), ale od svých 6 let žil v Nymburku, kde byl jeho otec správcem a posléze ředitelem pivovaru. Po roce studia na brněnském gymnáziu (Hrabal v primě propadl hned z několika předmětů) pokračoval ve školní docházce v Nymburku. Středoškolská studia zakončil roku dodatečnou maturitní zkouškou na reálném gymnáziu v Českém Brodě. Poté vystudoval Právnickou fakultu UK. ( &#; , přerušeno okupací).
Protože se literatuře věnuje profesionálně až od roku , stihl Hrabal vystřídat pestrou mozaiku zaměstnání: od písaře na notářství přes úředníka, skladníka, traťového dělníka, výpravčího, pojišťovacího agenta, obchodního cestujícího (prodával dokonce ohňostroje na bengálské ohně), dělníka v kladenských ocelárnách až po baliče starého papíru.
Snad u žádného jiného spisovatele není takováto pestrost v symbióze s vlastním dílem. Proto mělo smysl Hrabalovy peripetie připomenout, neb jinak by dílo plavalo ve vzduchoprázdnu a ztratilo by svou přesvědčivost.

A diferencia de otros autores, Hrabal no descubrió (o prefirió no desarrollar) su talento literario de forma temprana. Por esa razón, durante su juventud asistió a la Universidad Carolina de Praga para estudiar Derecho, una carrera en la que llegaría a doctorarse.
Recién en , cuando ya tenía cuarenta y nueve años de vida, este hombre que, para ganarse la vida, supo ser oficinista, viajante de comercio, obrero siderúrgico y jornalero, se animó a publicar su primer libro. Ese trabajo, titulado «Perlas en el fondo», sería llevado al cine por el cineasta Jiri Menzel, tal como sucedió también con otros de sus textos.
