​​I live in New York City and have taken photographs for many years.  At first, I shot with a Nikon SLR, then a DSLR and then switched to Sony mirrorless cameras.  Recently, I added a Leica Q3. ​I have started experimenting with black-and-white. Many years ago, I shot with Kodak Tri-X.  ​​I have not returned to film; my black-and- white images are from digital.

My wife, Robin Kellner, is an artist who draws and paints.  Some of her work is exhibited on the "Robin's Work" page on this site.

John Smith was born in Walthamstow, London in and lives and works in London. Smith studied at North-East London Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, after which he became an active member of the London Filmmakers Co-op. Inspired in his formative years by conceptual art and structural film, but also fascinated by the immersive power of narrative and the spoken word, he has developed an extensive body of work that subverts perceived boundaries between documentary and fiction, representation and abstraction. Often rooted in everyday life, his meticulously crafted films playfully explore and expose the language of cinema.

Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning and the Community Access Art Collective partner to present the first solo exhibition by artist John Smith.

A lifelong artist, Smith (b. ), born and raised in Brooklyn, has been a Queens resident for over 20 years. Smith was awarded a Queens Council on the Arts New Works grant to create 10 of the 11 acrylic paintings included in The Transit Series. The paintings look at the daily lives and activities that take place in New York City subways and buses.
