José María Velasco (b. 6 July ; d. 26 August ), Mexican painter. Velasco, a major landscape painter, is the foremost Mexican painter of the nineteenth century. He was the favorite pupil of the Italian landscapist Eugenio Landesio, who taught at the Academia de San Carlos between and Velasco succeeded him in and remained on the staff for the rest of his life. In Excursion in the Environs of Mexico City (), an early work, small figures from different walks of life, against a background of enormous trees and a distant landscape, suggest historical and social commentary. Velasco never ignored the human presence in landscape, but with time that presence became less anecdotal. In he executed the first of several large canvases titled Valley of Mexico, his most famous works.
Although he painted elsewhere in the country (Oaxaca, Veracruz) and produced views of buildings, self-portraits, and portraits, the broad vistas and the clear light of central Mexico were Velasco's favorite subjects. Mientras sus contemporáneos se inspiraban en tópicos religiosos, mitológicos o costumbristas, José María Velasco hizo de la geografía mexicana, con marcado acento romántico en sus últimos años, el símbolo de la identidad nacional. Dibujante excepcional, con una técnica depurada, un trazo muy preciso y un refinado colorido, todas sus virtudes artísticas florecen en las monumentales visiones del valle de México, donde plasmó de modo naturalista y a la vez poético la grandeza del Altiplano. Fue profesor de numerosos artistas y el espejo en el que se fijaron (en sus primeros años) los muralistas José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera y David Alfaro Siqueiros, que luego desearían romper vehementemente con él para adoptar una pintura puesta por completo al servicio de la Revolución.
