Martin Luther was a man whose heart was held captive to the Word of God. He was used mightily by God to usher in the Protestant Reformation, which would serve to recover the core truths of the Gospel that had been obscured by medieval religion and superstition.

Here is a brief biography of the man who sparked the Reformation.

The Early Years

Martin Luther was born on November 10, in Eisleben, Germany to Margaret and Hans Luder (the original pronunciation).

Hans worked in the mining industry, even owning a few copper mines, but he wanted something better for his son. Martin was sent off to boarding school and then to the University of Erfurt.

He was an excellent student. He soon earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree and seemed to be well on his way to success as a law student. But about a month into his legal studies, on the 2^nd of June in , Luther was on his way back to school from his parent’s home when he was caught in a violent thunderstorm. The storm grew more intense and Luther became afraid for his life.

Martin Luther was born on November 10, in Eisleben, Germany. This was not long before the time when Christopher Columbus sailed to find the new world.

In Luther entered Erfurt University to study to become a lawyer. There he received his bachelor’s degree. He returned to Erfurt to continue his study. Although he appeared happy to many, Luther was deeply concerned about his spiritual relationship with God. He saw God as an angry judge and not a loving Father. He could not see how a holy and just God would receive him into heaven.

After surviving a terrifying experience in a thunderstorm, Luther decided to become a monk. Luther entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt on July 17, His desire was to find God’s grace and mercy. He was 21 years old.

At this time it was taught that doing good works, praying to the saints and making pilgrimages would help a person be sure of heaven. Luther was terrified that he could not do enough to save his soul. However, even as a monk and later as a priest, no matter how many good works Luther did, it did not bring him peace.
