Remembering Pete Brown - The Man Who Deflected Hate and won Many Hearts
The late Pete Brown, who made history often in his year professional golf career, didn’t make a big fuss about much of anything.
Bob Goalby, the Masters Champion, said of his friend, “Pete didn’t let anything bother him, not getting too high or too low.”
That trait served Brown well as a Black professional golfer from the Deep South. According to his wife, Margaret, Pete often said, “Laugh at ‘em and keep going.”
He was born in , in Port Gibson, Mississippi, into a family of sharecroppers. His father, George, was a Baptist minister.
As a youngster, Pete chopped cotton and picked peas. The family moved to Jackson when he was 10 and he soon gravitated to the Livingston Park golf course where he became a caddie, making 35 cents for nine holes and 55 cents for
Blacks were not allowed to play that course or any in the city, but at night Brown said he and the other caddies would sneak out and play a few holes near the woods until they were chased off.
At age 19, Brown was stricken with polio; he spent a year in Herman Kiefer Hospital in Detroit, where his weight plummeted from to pounds.

In May , golf history was made in remote Burneyville, Oklahoma at a PGA Tour event called the Waco Turner Open. The tournament ran from to at a venue then known only as “Waco Turner’s golf course,” and it combined professional golf with elements of the Wild West and Las Vegas prop betting. According to all accounts, the paucity of crowds at this event would not be seen again until the summer of , when the PGA Tour resumed its schedule – without spectators – during the COVID pandemic. It could well have been the strangest tour event ever staged.
The main principals in were two nonwhite men, both born in Mississippi. One was the sponsor, Waco Turner, a member of the Chickasaw Nation. He was a wealthy, peculiar septuagenarian who carried pistols that he showed a willingness to use. The second was Pete Brown, a quiet, friendly sharecropper’s son who became the first Black golfer to win an official PGA Tour event.

While Charlie Sifford is widely celebrated and credited for being the man who broke golf’s color barrier, far less is known about Pete Brown, the first Black man to win a PGA TOUR event.
“This is not just Black history, it’s American history,” says Dr. Michael Cooper, a former club professional and golf administrator who now serves as an advisor to the United States Golf Association. “And sometimes our stories don’t get told the way they need to get told.”
Pete Brown’s road to this historic win was filled with challenges that he somehow, miraculously, would overcome. He is not a footnote in history. His story deserves to be told and re-told.
Pete Brown came up in the Deep South; Jackson, Mississippi, to be specific. He was born in , smack dab in the middle of the Great Depression, in the poorest state in the union, and he was born Black in a period when Jim Crow laws ruled the world he knew.
