It was a year that gave much to the photographic annuals of our generation. For one of the most celebrated photographers of all time, Annie Liebowitz, it initiated a pivotal fifteen years of documentation in her life, culminating in her biographical tome, ‘A Photographer’s Life: ’. In Ohio, the last moments of gay activist, David Kirby’s life were being committed to celluloid as his wizened frame, brutally emaciated by the Aids virus provided the poster image for enlightening the world to the severity of the disease, becoming an iconic shot in its own right. And British music photographer Steve Gullick was already some way into his own career, but about to embark on three arching years under the service of Sounds and Melody Maker magazines that would later inform his recent exhibition, ‘Punk as Fuck’.

 One of the most prolific periods of Steve’s career ran in parallel with one of the most explosive times in rock music the world has ever seen. For Steve the genesis of the era came when Sounds commissioned him to photograph Screaming Trees in Much more of his signature work came however

From 1st April – 13th May, Rough Trade East are showing Steve Gullick's first ever exhibition of work in London. Renowned as one of the world's best rock n' roll photographers, this hand printed selection includes powerful images of Nick Cave, Neil Young, Cat Power, Jason Pierce, Nirvana, Thurston Moore, Seasick Steve, Kim Deal, The Raconteurs, Mercury Rev, Jeff Buckley and Grinderman amongst many others. The April 1st opening will be celebrated with live performances from Ed Harcourt, Duke Garwood and Tenebrous Liar along with DJ sets from Soulsavers & Jim Sclavunos.

Here, the man who also created the classic underground music mags 'Careless Talk Cost Lives', and Loose Lips Sink Ships', talks about how the show came about and the story behind some of his most iconic images.

Dazed Digital: Steve, why are you doing this show now?

Steve Gullick: I was convinced by my agent to do an exhibition in Los Angeles in January. While I was doing it I got really into printing pictures - I never really printed my pictures big before, there was never a reason to. As I was assembling it I thought it would be cool to show them in Coventry as we

Steve Gullick: And an Extraordinary Photo Monument of an Amazing Era in Music&#;

There&#;s music photographers: and then there&#;s music photographers.

One of the great rock photographers of a generation, Steve Gullick, has produced a priceless photo journal capturing his time with some of the greatest bands and musical personages of one of music&#;s most fertile, legendary eras.

Such was showcased in his Punk As Fuck exhibition in London last year, which exhibited a selection of his favorite photos from the early nineties music scene &#; an era that, I maintain, produced most of the greatest, most enduring, music that has ever been recorded.

The picture at the top of the page is one of many photographs of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana in particular that Gullick took.

Gullick captured some of the most resonant and enduring music images and moments-in-time from the last two decades, including everyone from PJ Harvey and Radiohead to the acts and gigs right in the thick of the grunge scene in Seattle.

A lot of Gullick&#;s photos are iconic: though you might not have known their source, even if you&#;d seen them before.

Charles Peterson’s grainy, blurred, black-and-white photography may have defined the early grunge aesthetic, but as the ‘Seattle sound’ exploded globally, no photographer got closer to the scene’s key players than Londoner Steve Gullick during his time with the now-defunct ‘inkies’ Sounds and Melody Maker.

Gullick first shot a wide-eyed Nirvana in August ’91, one month ahead of the release of Nevermind, initiating a friendship which led him to gain intimate access to Kurt Cobain, even as the fast-rising band sought to keep an increasingly ravenous media at arm’s length.

Fleshed out with striking portraits of the ‘alternative’ scene’s principal cast members (Hole, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Mudhoney, etc), this beautifully produced page book is a vivid document of a tumultuous time in rock history, perfectly capturing the vulnerability, intensity and escalating bemusement of punk rock musicians
