Finally !
You may hopefully still be interested to know that the new album Beachcombing is finally at the pressing plant. ( I know I have been telling you it was called Glow for most of last year, but I have now decided that Beachcombing seems to describe the feel of the album more accurately ) . Also, having told you that the album has been in the pipeline for about 2 years now I can confirm that, subject any further complications, it will be released in February - HONEST ! This post is partly to let you know about the forthcoming new album, but mainly my excuse to have a good old rant, and to explain how this could have possibly taken so long.
Those of you that have purchased any of the RE : CDs may have noticed that they were on the Long Tale Recordings label. It took me a long time to realise that in fact this was not really a proper record label at all, ultimately just an enormous time wasting hinderance. Contrary to all the assurances and good intentions, it had no distribution in place, no publicity or promotional plan, or actually even any staff. There were constant promises and a
football chants and nursery rhymes
I wasnt exactly jumping at an opportunity to hear an album by Bob Holroyd, which he titled Football Chants and Nursery Rhymes. After all, it would fall somewhere between crying babies and whistling drunks for me. But I wont just judge the book by its cover, nor the album by its title or the cover art. This is something Ive learned long ago, so its time to hear the music. And given the fact that Holroyd has been deeply rooted in the world of ambient, neoclassical, and cinematic music, something tells me that this title here is tongue-in-cheek. The album title derives from a conversation Holroyd had with a musician friend who commented on what type of music people say they like in relation to what they actually buy. This sentiment also extends to record labels which imply they are looking for something new and different yet seemingly release the same kind of music. This is something I could surely get behind. It reminds me of another circulating meme, where one is asked, what kind of music do you listen to? then answered with an everything and smile. And then theyre blasted with so
"From the gentle touches of piano on ‘Beige’, to the post-rock rumblings of ‘The Day Before’ and the haunting fragility of ‘Big Fields’, Holroyd looks to explore sounds, spaces, and everything in between. ‘Football Chants and Nursery Rhymes’ is an album of emotion – a tender, touching album full of feeling and sentiment. There’s a reflective beauty to the emotive ‘Straight Jacket’ while swathes of affecting electronica dictate the flow of ‘Cart Blanche’. Elsewhere, ‘Capture’ flickers on the edge of melody and ambience and the minimalistic classicism of ‘Ship Sailed’ and ‘Mangled Pianos’ show a musician capable of remarkable tenderness"

Here’s Bob Holroyd’s third album “A Different Space” -turning out significantly more tribal-spiced- which would not have been out of place on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. With the previous recordings Fluidity and Structure and Stages, Holroyd already managed to deliver an intriguing portion of music, to which this A Different Space could fit right in.
The result, on which Bob is skilfully accompanied by a number of session musicians, contains a richly varied portion of multi-cultural, strongly organic-sounding ethno-electronic music in which subdued and more rhythmically oriented tracks alternate atmospherically. In the Tribal Mix of African Drug with its rousing tabla playing, for instance, you would almost expect the gentlemen of Yello to pop up at any moment. The first two tracks of the album are also more rousing in character. There the nicely subdued Journeyman or pithy Enya-like Dark Waters, on the other hand, sound nicely subdued.
The also subdued piece Something Understood in turn -with the exception of the sampled
