The first mainstream transgender model, Tracey "Africa" Norman, was hand-picked in by Irving Penn at a casting call for Italian Vogue. From there, Norman walked for houses like Balenciaga and signed contracts with brands like Clairol and Avon. Her future in fashion seemed boundless—but when she was outed as a transgender woman, the work disappeared. Despite the prejudice shown against Norman at the height of her career, the fashion world has long maintained close ties with the LGBTQ+ community. Some of the industry’s biggest leaders have had transgender muses: Stephen Sprouse worked closely with Teri Toye in the '80s, Thierry Mugler with Connie Fleming in the '90s, and Jean Paul Gaultier with Roberta Close, also in the '90s.

Being outed as transgender was once enough to end a career in modelling, but some brands and magazines are now actively seeking to work with people who are openly and proudly trans. How did being transgender become viewed as not only acceptable but aspirational?
"I never actually thought that trans people would be celebrated," said Paris Lees. "When I was growing up the only time I ever saw trans people in the media or in advertising, we were presented as objects of pity, ridicule or disgust."
The trans rights campaigner and writer was speaking at Fortune's Most Powerful Women conference, where she was announced as a brand ambassador for hair care brand Pantene.
Lees, who grew up in the Nottinghamshire town of Hucknall, is the first transgender woman to be appointed by Pantene. However, she is far from the only transgender person to model for a mainstream brand, with transgender men and women including Valentina Sampaio, Chella Man and Andreja Pejić being hired by the likes of Victoria's Secret, Gap and Make Up For Ever.

In Gail O’Neill was selling copiers for Xerox when a photographer spotted the year-old beauty at JFK Airport and gave her the name of model agent Frances Grill.
O’Neill had no portfolio and had never walked on a catwalk before she stepped into Click, the Manhattan agency Grill started in Plus she wasn’t used to seeing girls like herself — that is, black girls — in magazines or runways at all.
That didn’t matter to Grill. She took one look at O’Neill through her signature oversized glasses and signed her on the spot.
“Three days later I was working,” O’Neill told The Post. “Three months later I was on the cover of British Vogue.”
Grill died on Jan. 24 at the age of 90, just two weeks before the start of New York Fashion Week. Yet the iconoclastic, tough-talkin’, pastrami-loving Brooklynite could be felt everywhere on the season’s runways, which have gotten progressively more diverse thanks to her.
