Yiqing Yin

Haute Couture has become my secret garden, something I don’t have to sell or disguise.

For Yiqing Yin, haute couture is a state of mind. The Grand Prize winner at the Andam Fashion Award is a true architecte for clothes. After working as a creative director for big names of ready-to-wear, she now takes the time to create her own way. Her year-old label (just like Say Who, coincidentally) allowed her to be awarded the official ‘haute couture’ designation by the Chambre Syndicale back in While she works as a creative consultant here and there, Yinqing Yin now dedicates herself entirely to her craft, and considers haute couture as a laboratory of experimentations that allows her to dip into numerous other disciplines. At the start of a new year that still seems to be full of interrogations, we met in her Parisian apartment filled with dresses and memories…

How did you experience as a designer, especially working with handcrafted pieces and in collaborative settings?

This year was unexpected in many ways because we lost all our markers abruptly. My job has two dimensions: the first being related to craftsmanship, working almost like an artist. This is some

&#;Returning to my clothes, was like living once more within my body and my emotions; I was at home.&#;

Born in Beijing in , Yiqing Yin immigrates from China at the age of 4 to France then Australia. Living between countries, her clothes have often provided her with a point of reference. She aims to create a garment that protects and reinforces, being at the same time a second skin and a flexible armor. Examining the dynamic potential of pleats, she imagines never-fixed structures, always-in-mutation volumes. She sculpts the emptiness around the body through the pursuit of balance and points of disruption between flowing zones and sculpted zones. Through the modernisation of smock technique and the elimination of any order of construction, she experiments garment “tombé”, seeking for fluid lines. She models loose shapes with staggering structures and confesses her attraction for an intuitive method of creation, a sensory wandering, and a search for voluntary accidents.

Graduated from the ENSAD (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs) & armed with her innovative vision of Couture, Yiqing Yin is distinguished by the Grand Prix de la Création of Paris in During the Fe

#TheBrand | Poiret

Each week, we look into an exciting and innovative label that is taking the fashion world by storm in our regular feature #TheBrand. This time, we’re turning the spotlight on the newly revived, over year-old Parisian fashion house, Poiret.

Famous for inventing the draped and less structured silhouette that went on to influence women's style forever, Paul Poiret made a name for himself on the international fashion scene in the early s, but (due to WW1) was forced to shut just three decades later. After a year hiatus, the brand showed its first collection of the century in March to much fanfare.

We sat down with the new artistic director Yiqing Yin to discover everything there is to know about this fascinating label.

Origins

Poiret has a long and interesting history, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.

The house was originally established by Paul Poiret back in – a designer who became known as the first to encourage women to wear loose-fitting clothing and to rid the corset from their wardrobes, becoming an international icon in the process. The label saw plenty of success – and is widely credited with inventing the harem pant, t
