Zaz - mit bürgerlichem Namen Isabelle Geffroy - wurde am 1. Mai im französischen Tours geboren. Ihre Mutter war Französischlehrerin und ihr Vater arbeitete in einem Unternehmen für Elektrizitätsversorgung. Musik war von klein auf ihre große Leidenschaft. Bereits im zarten Alter von fünf Jahren nahm die kleine Isabelle ihren ersten Musikunterricht - unter anderem lernte sie Gitarre, Klavier und Geige spielen.
Mit 20 Jahren studierte Zaz in Bordeaux am CIAM (Centre d’Information et d’Activités Musicales) Musik. Parallel dazu trat sie mit der Latin-Rockband „Don Diego“ als Sängerin auf. Ein Highlight war die Teilnahme am Festival „Musiques Métisses d’Angoulême“
