A student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, Adolphe Mouron Cassandre was a painter, commercial poster artist and typeface designer. His inventive graphic techniques show influences of Surrealism and Cubism and became very popular in Europe and the US during the s. He was a teacher as well as an artist and led courses at both the École des Arts Décoratifs and the École d'Art Graphique in and He and several other partners formed the advertising agency Alliance Graphiqe, which worked for a broad client base throughout the s.
One of his most well recognized posters was the Normandie Poster and while his primary success stemmed from designing posters he also designed magazine covers, advertisements, logos and typefaces. In he designed the typeface Peignot for the Deberny & Peignot type foundry in Paris, France. He joined the French army during the German invasion of World War II, after the devastating effects of the war he found work designing sets for ballet and theater production. In , after a severe battle with depression, he ended his own life.Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron, known as dre was born in Kharkov (Russian Empire until ), Ukraine, on January 24, His parents were French. After a childhood spent shuttling back and forth between Russia and France, he settled in Paris with his family in and completed his schooling there. ln , after attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts very briefly, he enrolled in Lucien Simon's independent studio and later at the Académie Julian.
Soon obliged to earn his own living, Mouron designed several posters, possibly as early as ; they were done in a caricatural style which was probably derived from the German School. Almost all of these early works have been lost. ln he moved to his first studio in Paris, on the Rue du Moulin-Vert in Montparnasse. He decided to sign his advertising designs with the pseudonym Cassandre, which was sometimes combined (up to ) with the name Mouron.
In , Cassandre completed the first work characterized by his synthetic style, "Au Bucheron". The poster, reproduced in a very large format on numerous locations throughout Paris, created a sensation and brought instant fame to its designer. It was awarded the first prize at the Expo
