Ottoline Morrell, an English aristocrat and patron, was one of the central figures in the Bloomsbury Group. Ottoline Cavendish-Bentinck was granted the title of lady at the age of six and in , like her stepbrother William, she was entitled to the Duke of Portland's title. Ottoline had numerous family connections to the British aristocracy. In , she married the Liberal Party politician Philip Morrell, with whom she had a daughter. However, both spouses agreed to lead a free lifestyle. Lady Morrell had multiple lovers, including writer and philosopher Bertrand Russell, artists Roger Fry and Augustus John, and artist Dora Carrington (bisexuality was common among members of the Bloomsbury Group). Lady Morrell hosted a social salon in London where distinguished cultural figures of Britain gathered, such as D.H. Lawrence, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Lytton Strachey, and Stephen Spender, among others.

A century and eight years ago, an aristocrat and her middle class husband moved into number 44 Bedford Square. A century and six years later, an admirer of this aristocrat founded a college (NCH) in her house’s mirror image on the square’s Northern side, and named its academic salon after her.
What had she done to deserve this honour?
Lady Ottoline Morrell was what modern jargon would call a facilitator, and the Edwardians called a patroness. In Bedford Square, and at her country house in Oxfordshire, she hosted artists of many kinds &#; introducing them to each other, giving them presents, and offering her friendship.
