Summary

The next morning, Samuel sees Wahunsonacock, the Great Powhatan, for the first time. He is wearing a lot of copper and glass beads, which Samuel recognizes is a sign of his wealth and power. Capt. Smith invites Powhatan to James Town to receives gifts from King James. Samuel sees immediately that it is insulting to invite an emperor to another place to accept gifts. Powhatan refuses and says he will wait eight days for these gifts to be brought to him. He also says that Capt. Newport must come.

On the way back to James Town, Capt. Smith vents his anger, saying that the bad decisions of the Virginia Company owners will get them all killed.

Smith delivers Powhatan's message, and though Capt. Newport isn't happy about it, he resolves to go to Powhatan's village. He must obey the orders given him by

Chapter 22 Summary

Winter arrives, and “our trouble starts” (). The men are spending too much time searching for gold and not enough time farming and hunting, and Captain Newport sets sail for England in December with most of the food supply. Trading with the natives proves to be futile as “Chief Powhatan has commanded all of his tribes not to trade with us” (). One day, two natives appear to announce that the chief is finally ready to trade and that he wants weapons in addition to the usual beads and copper; though Captain Smith tells the messengers that he agrees, he tells his men he will not give them weapons.

On their way to Werowocomoco, the chief of the Warraskoyack tribe advises Captain Smith not to trust Chief Powhatan. Captain Smith decides to leave Samuel with this tribe so that Samuel can convey a message to James Town if something happens to Captain Smith. The chief’s son teaches Samuel how to make arrowheads and knives out of rocks, and Samuel soon adapts to the ways of the village. Chapter 17 Summary

The ship from England brings food, ale, and wine along with 60 new colonists and their dogs, hogs, and chickens. Captain Smith does not hang, and Master Archer is removed from the council, and the presence of Captain Newport ensures that “a fragile peace” () is in place. Not long after the arrival of Captain Newport, a Native American canoe filled with food appears on the shores of the settlement, and Samuel and Richard are mesmerized by the sight of a little girl who “wears several necklaces of pearls and copper” (). She leaves the canoe to speak in Algonquin with Captain Smith about the gift of food she has brought, and Samuel realizes she must be the princess Amonute, also called Pocahontas. When Captain Smith introduces her to the boys, they are excited to show her the cabins and Samuel practices his Algonquin with her, which “feels like magic” (). The boys and Pocahontas play and run a race, and Samuel is not proud of being beaten by a young girl.
