Nacido en Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, en , Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt es un escritor y dramaturgo francés con nacionalización belga. Se licenció y doctoró en Filosofía en l´École Normal Supérieure de París. Fue profesor en la Escuela Militar Saint Cyr durante su servicio militar y, más adelante, también impartiría clases en las universidades de Cherburgo y Chambéry.
Schmitt es autor de ensayos, relatos cortos, novelas y obras de teatro. Ha recibido numerosos galardones, entre ellos el Gran Premio de Teatro otorgado por la Academia francesa en reconocimiento al conjunto de su obra.
Además de su labor literaria Schmitt es un gran aficionado a la música. Ha compuesto obras y traducido óperas de Mozart al francés.

Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt est un écrivain, dramaturge et réalisateur français d'origine belge, né le 28 mars à Lyon. Il est l'un des auteurs francophones contemporains les plus célèbres et les plus lus dans le monde, grâce à des œuvres telles que "La Nuit de Valognes", "Le Cycle de l'invisible" et "La Part de l'autre".
Schmitt grandit à Lyon, où il étudie le piano et développe un amour précoce pour la littérature. Après avoir obtenu son baccalauréat, il poursuit ses études à l'École normale supérieure de la rue d'Ulm à Paris, où il étudie la philosophie et obtient un diplôme d'agrégation. Il complète également un doctorat en philosophie à la Sorbonne sous la direction de Jean Wahl, avec une thèse consacrée à Diderot et à la métaphysique.
Sa carrière littéraire débute en avec la pièce de théâtre "La Nuit de Valognes", une comédie inspirée du personnage de Don Juan. Cette pièce connaît un succès immédiat et marque le début d'une longue carrière de dramaturge. Parmi ses autres pièces célèbres, on peut citer "Le Libertin" (), "Hôtel des deux mondes" () et "Petits Crimes conjugaux" ().
