O. HENRY (), an American short-story writer, was born at Greensboro, N.C., on Sept. 11, His real name was William Sydney Porter, and he came from an old southern family.
Education: Until 15 years of age he attended a school directed by his maternal aunt in Greensboro, then entered his uncle&#;s drugstore as a clerk. From early years he was a constant reader, and he secured a wide knowledge of the English classics. He has recorded that his favourite books were Lane&#;s translation of The ArabianNights and Burton&#;s Anatomy of Melancholy, and that he was a devoted admirer of Tennyson.
Employment: The close confinement as drug-clerk impaired his health, and in he was sent to a friend&#;s ranch in Texas, where he remained two years. In he went to Austin, Tex., where he lived ten years, first as a book-keeper in a real estate office, then as an employee in the General Land Office and from as teller in the First National Bank of Austin. Born William Sidney Porter in Greensboro, North Carolina in , the writer used several pen names until he settled on O. Henry in , since the name seemed most popular with editors and readers. O. Henry's prolific output resulted in seventeen story collections, as well as dozens more uncollected stories, poems, and nonfiction works.
Since O. Henry's death in , his stories have been adapted into films, several buildings bear his name, and both the Soviet Postal Service and the United States Postal Service have released commemorative stamps to mark O. Henry's hundredth and hundred-and-fiftieth birthdays, respectively. The annual O. Henry Award is given to exceptional English-language stories printed in American and Canadian magazines.

O. Henry moved to Texas in March of hoping to get rid of a persistent cough that he had developed. While there, he took up residence on a sheep ranch, learned shepherding, cooking, babysitting, and bits of Spanish and German from the many migrant farmhands. A writer whose personal life paralleled his fictional works, Porter lived a varied life throughout the South, Honduras, and New York City. Most important, though, are not the places where Porter traveled but his early childhood in Greensboro, North Carolina. Born on September 11, , to a middle-class family, William was the middle child of three sons. He was only three years old when his mother and brother passed away from tuberculosis.
Grandma Porter, a self-trained doctor and local figure in Greensboro, raised the Porter children after William’s mother passed away. Will’s father and physician, Algernon Porter, cared for his children, but an infatuation with inventing a perpetual motion machine and drinking whiskey hindered him from being a true father figure to William.
