Barker's Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery

Barker&#;s Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery is a middle-range theory of nursing that can be used as the basis for interdisciplinary health care. The main focus of the model is on helping individual patients create their own voyage of discovery.

Phil Barker defines the Tidal Model as &#;a philosophical approach to the discovery of mental health. It emphasises helping people reclaim the personal story of mental distress, by recovering their voice. By using their own language, metaphors and personal stories people begin to express something of the meaning of their lives. This is the first step towards helping recover control over their lives.&#; It provides a nursing care practice framework for the exploration of the patient&#;s need for nursing and the provision of individually-tailored care plans. The theory states that an individual&#;s mental well-being is dependent on his or her individual life experiences, including his or her sense of self, perceptions, thoughts, and actions.

The main philosophical metaphor is drawn from chaos theory. That is, the unpredictable, yet unbounded, nature of human behavior and experience is c

Phil Barker's Contribution to Nursing Theory: Tidal Model

The Tidal Model of nursing, created by Phil Barker, Poppy Buchanan-Barker and their colleagues, is widely used in mental health nursing. It views health and illness as fluid, and life as a journey undertaken on an ocean of experience. However, it states that patients can become physically, emotionally, or spiritually shipwrecked. This metaphor of water throughout the theory should be appreciated by nurses to help them gain a better understanding of the patient&#;s current situation, as well as the inevitability of change.

Barker&#;s model includes six philosophical assumptions: a belief in the virtue of curiosity; recognition of the power of resourcefulness; respect for the patient&#;s wishes; acceptance of the paradox of crisis as opportunity; acknowledging that all goals must belong to the atient; and the virtue of pursuing elegance, which means the simplest possible means should be sought.

In order for the nurse to start the engagement process with the patient, six things must be accepted: recovery is possible; change is inevitable; ultimately, people know what&#;s best for them; the

Major Concepts

The Tidal Model lists six core assumptions.

  • There is a belief in the value of curiosity
  • Resourcefulness is more powerful than focusing on problems and weaknesses
  • There is a respect for the patients&#; wishes rather than a paternalistic attitude
  • Crisis is an opportunity for growth
  • Patients must set their own goals
  • The simplest way to achieve goals should be pursued

These core values have to be understood and assumed. Then the engagements in process belief are identified along with the three domains.

Engagements:

  • It is possible to recover
  • Change is constant and unavoidable
  • Patients know what is best for them
  • Recognition of the power of resourcefulness, rather than focusing on problems, deficits or weaknesses
  • The patients are the teachers and the health workers learn from them
  • Health workers need to be curious and learn what needs to be done for the patients
  • Acknowledging that all goals must belong to the person

Three Domains:

  • Self-Domain
  • World Domain

    Phil Barker

Dr. Phil Barker, his wife Poppy Buchanan-Barker and several of their colleagues created the Tidal Wave Model to promote mental health. It is a revolutionary theory that relies heavily on metaphors that are used to empower people and uses each person's experiences and wisdom to effect change. Since , the theory has been used in the United Kingdom and in many other international settings.

    Early Life

Phil Barker and his wife and colleague, Poppy, grew up in small towns outside of Scotland in the s. They both came from modest backgrounds. He describes his parents as hard working, morally conscious people who had very little in material goods but felt that work, love and laughter were important. He feels that his childhood was the golden age that influenced the rest of his life. Poppy's father, John Buchanan, was a coal miner who taught her to love nature and instilled in her the values of myth and legend that gave her strength of character. His death from the hazards of coal dust taught her that life is a mixture of light and darkness. Her career in social work is the perfect complement to her husband's work in the mental health field.
