LAENNEC, RENÉ (–), French physician.
Born in Quimper, Brittany, on 17 February , René Théophile Hyacinthe Laennec was the eldest child of three. Their mother died in and their father, a magistrate and poet, was incapable of caring for his family. Laennec and his brother went to live with their uncle, Guillaume Laennec, a physician at Nantes. As an adolescent, Laennec began the study of medicine under the tutelage of his uncle. The Revolution disrupted his home and education, leaving a deep impression on his spiritual and political views. He thereafter opposed the atheism and republicanism of the new intelligentsia, and later joined the Congrégation, a clandestine group of Catholics. In , he began his studies at the newly reopened medical school in Paris, where he studied with Jean Noël Hallé and Baron Jean-Nicolas Corvisart des Marets, physician to Napoleon Bonaparte. Corvisart had developed Leopold Auenbrugger's examination technique of percussion, which involved tapping on the chest to determine the state of the organs inside. Corvisart correlated sounds emanating from the chests of living patients with later findings at autopsy, and after twenty years of ex
Rene Laennec
French physician and inventor René Théophile Hyacinthe Laennec sealed his place in history with a number of important contributions to the medical field. A pulmonary disease pioneer, he introduced the diagnostic method known as mediate auscultation and invented the device that no modern doctor can live without, the stethoscope.
Born in the city of Quimper, in Brittany, France on Feb. 17, , Laennec’s mother died of tuberculosis when he was six. Subsequently, his father sent him to live with his granduncle. He visited Nantes when he was 12, where his uncle was a practicing physician and taught as a professor at the university there.
Inspired by what he learned from his uncle, he went to Paris to pursue an education in medicine at the age of 19, where he studied at the Hôpital de la Charité under several well-known physicians of the time, including Napoleon Bonaparte’s personal doctor, Jean-Nicolas Corvisart des Marest. He qualified in While still a student, he gave one of the world’s first lectures on melanoma, coining the term melanoma from the Greek word for “black.” The lecture was published a year later.

René Laennec was a French physician who invented the stethoscope. Known as the father of clinical auscultation, René Laennec is considered to be one of the greatest doctors of all times. Born as the son of a lawyer, he was actually discouraged from practicing medicine as a young man. But as fate would have it, he proceeded to study under several famous physicians, including Dupuytren and Jean-Nicolas Corvisart-Desmarets before becoming a prominent physician in his own right. The introduction of auscultation—a new method to diagnose diseases was his biggest contribution to medical science. This method involves listening to and identifying various sounds made by different body organs. Before the invention of this method, Laennec’s diagnostic method involved placing his ear on the chest of his patients. This method made him quite uncomfortable especially while he was diagnosing young women and hence this led to the innovation of a new device called stethoscope which he initially termed as “chest examiner”. With his new chest examiner, he was able to study the different sounds of the heart thus categorizing them as either healthy or unhealthy. Though criticized initi
