Su Shi
Su Shi is a renowned Chinese poet of the 11th century. Besides being a poet, he is also skilled in calligraphy, painting and a known public figure during the Song Dynasty. He is also known from his other name, Su Dongpo.
The Humble Beginnings of a Famed Man
Su Shi was born on the 8th of January at Meishan, now known as Sichuan Province, in China. His family consists of a father, mother and a younger brother. Coming from a family of well-educated people, both his father, Su Xun and his brother, Su Zhe, are enthusiasts of literature. His mother is also part of the well-cultured.
As a child, Su Shi was under the tutelage of a Taoist priest of which his mother took after. In , Su and his younger brother took the civil service examination together to secure Jinshi. Jinshi was a requirement for high government office positions. He and his brother passed with flying colors that garnered them popularity at the time. Emperor Renzhong, who was the ruler of the time, took an interest to Su, as well as famed official and scholar Ouyang Xiu. The latter became Su's sponsor, and Xiu had expressed from before that he was an avid admirer of his father, Su Xu
In the later period of Song Dynasty, the celebrated poet, calligrapher, painter, Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian Su Dongpo was the governor of Hangzhou for two times, firstly it was the time between and , secondly between and In , Hangzhou encountered the drought and famine. He learned of the people's disastrous life and requested the central government to decrease 1/3 taxes for redressing the victims of natural calamity. Besides he also donated some of his income to help those people. Later, Hangzhou suffered from the flood and many people became destitute and homeless. He requested to decrease the quantity of rice for government for saving those people in flooding area. Meanwhile, he appealed to donation for establishing the institution of medical treatment. After these two disasters, he felt the importance and function of irrigating construction, but at that time the West Lake had been severely stagnated for a long time, he recruited the peasant workers roughly , to dredge up this lake and built up the bank and six stone-arch bridges. The later generations named the bank as Su Causeway to memorizing him.

The poems and lyrics of Su Shi (), often known as Su Dongpo, were of a virile timbre and an unrestrained spirit.
He fully demonstrated his preeminent talent for poem, prose, calligraphy and painting. He was honored as the Four Great Masters in the Song Dynasty with Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu and Cai Xiang. After studying the style of Wang Xizhi, he studied the style of Yan Zhenqing and Yang Ningshi. His calligraphy executed smooth strokes with natural atmosphere. He was also skillful at painting bamboo and old trees. His works were included in "The collections of Dongpo", etc.
