This tender memoir chronicles the early years of Sayyid Qutb, one of Egypt’s most influential radical Islamist thinkers and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
"The child’s eye, feelings, emotions, as well as the comments of a grown-up writer present valuable information for students who are interested in the modern history of Egypt as well as those who are interested in the history of Egyptian culture. In addition, the book provides scholars of Qutb’s ideology with the texture of life that produced, and still produces, such an ideology, in which the cry for social and political justice is mixed with a utopian adherence to a divine law."—Nasr Abu-Zayd, author of Rethinking the Qur’an: Towards a Humanistic Hermeneutics

In recent years, Sayyid Qutb has become infamous as the intellectual godfather of al-Qaeda. Indeed, as John Calvert writes in Sayyid Qutb and the Origins of Radical Islam, a consensus has emerged that the ‘road to 9/11 traces back to him. In their attempts to explain the movement he helped to spawn, Gilles Kepel, William Shepard, Lawrence Wright, and others have already limned the contours of Qutbs life and thought. Calvert, however, offers the first truly comprehensive biography. Building on the work of his predecessors, he offers new insight into Qutbs early writings as well as details of the dark days he spent in Nassers prisons. What emerges is a more nuanced portrait, not only of the historic Qutb, but also of the process of transformations that eventually produced Qutbism.
Qutb was born in a small Egyptian village in to a middle-income, land-owning family. He was fascinated at an early age by his countrys newly emerging group of liberal, middle-class effendis, several of whom taught at his school. Everything about them—their outlook, appearance, and life experiences—seemed connected to an exciting new world of change, movement, and intellectual

Perhaps no writer of the twentieth century has had a more significant impact on Islamic politics than Sayyid Qutb. From his young adult life as one of the leading literary critics in Cairo to his eventual radicalization, imprisonment, and execution by Nasser, Qutb’s writings left an indelible mark on the Middle East at the time and later political movements and groups. However, his status as the ‘Father of Modern Jihadism’ is complicated, leaving a legacy not quite accurate to his writings.
Life
Qutb was born in the Egyptian village of Mosha to a Sufi family in Living in a devout community, he showed an early interest in Islamic scholarship, memorizing the Quran at ten years old. After moving to Cairo to further his studies, he began working in the Education Ministry and wrote poetry and literary criticism. Eventually, he became part of the Effendi (high social standing of well-educated young men) as a well-renowned critic, and his influence helped initially propel Naguib Mahfouz, of whom he was a fan, to literary stardom in Egypt. As time passed, his religi
Sayyid Qutb and Islamic Activism: A Translation and Critical Analysis of Social Justice in Islam
This work is a translation of an important book by one of the forerunners of the current "resurgence" of Islam. Its author was a prominent Islamic activist in Egypt in the late s and early s and was jailed and eventually executed for his activities. Today he is commonly viewed as a martyr and his books are widely read.
First written in , Social Justice in Islam went through five further editions, each revised in a manner reflecting his increasingly radical views. The present work translates the last edition, the most radical one, and also provides the alternative readings from the earlier editions, so that the reader can trace the development of the author's thinking. The introduction provides a brief biography of the author and an analysis of the changes in his thinking reflected in this book.
